QOTD: When Is Tech Too Invasive?

I don't like drunk driving, especially in this day and age when there is almost no excuse for it. Most of us have apps that can call us a ride, even in places where taxis aren't plentiful, should we overindulge.

That said, I also don't like having my privacy violated.

Like Matt P., I abhor the idea that I might need to blow into a breathalyzer to start my car because of government mandate -- even if I have never been convicted of a DUI. I agree with Matt that sensors meant to detect alcohol in the air might register false positives if I am sober and my passenger has been imbibing.

That said, most of us make compromises when it comes to our privacy. I use social media, even though it serves me ads based on products I've searched. I test new cars each week, and some are equipped with safety tech that compromises the driver's privacy.

So, at what point does the tech go too far?

You know what to do. Sound off below.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

This is pretty interesting, if you are into petroleum like I am.
