Used Car of the Day: 1953 Chevrolet Pickup

I don't pull hot rods often for this feature, but tomorrow is the Fourth of July and what's more American than a 1953 Chevrolet Pickup?

This one has been fully restored, and underhood is a 235 cubic-inch mill that mates to a column-mounted manual transmission.

Our seller didn't list the mileage but they do indicate that the truck does get driven to car shows and other events.

You can click here for more details. This one is for sale in the Orlando area for $14,800.

Baseball, apple pie, and Chevrolet.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

    Gee...are pickup trucks bigger now?

The 1953 Chevy pickup truck had a wheelbase of 116 inches, an overall length of 191 inches, and a width of 74 inches.

The 2025 Chevrolet Colorado has a wheelbase of 131 inches, an overall length of 213 inches and a width of 78 inches.

Jeff I bought four sheets of 3/4" OSB this week [23/32" technically, probably because of tariffs] and had the '03 Silverado instead of the '95 Sierra with the wood flatbed that I built (because I still haven't installed the new brake booster) and as a consequence I had to drive home with the tailgate down. It was embarrassing.

Is this out of an Old Navy store?

  • EBFlex No....you can find plenty of used "fun" cars that are very reasonable with low miles. What does give me pause is the outrageous insurance and yearly registration fees. I shouldn't have to pay for a full year of road use when I can't use the car for half the year. Another factor is interest rates. The dolt that runs the fed is keeping them high for purely political reasons. They need to come down ASAP.
  • 1995 SC I actually really like these. I love the Busso V6. And I will continue to admire them in someone else's driveway like all Alfas. I really want a 4c, but I don't quite hate myself enough
  • 1995 SC I actually know a guy with one of these. Coolest Tercel ever. I don't mean anything derogatory by that.
  • 1995 SC A Miata can be had for under 30. GTIs are still reasonable as is the Jetta GLI. GR86 is reasonable. Plenty of choices out there. If you look at things like the Mustang now versus even back in the 90s sure, it costs more, but it's performance envelope is also vastly higher.
  • 1995 SC No. It gets great gas mileage.
