The Human-Powered Copter Bigger Than a Boeing 737
The Atlas helicopter, created by Aerovelo, a team of University of Toronto students and alumni, was engineered to push the boundaries of human-powered flight.
With an astonishing 154-foot wingspan, the Atlas is actually larger than a Boeing 737, yet completely powered by human pedaling. Its design features four giant rotors connected to a central bicycle-like frame, allowing the pilot to generate lift across all rotors simultaneously and hover using pure muscle power.
In 2013, Atlas made history by winning the Sikorsky Human Powered Helicopter Challenge, staying aloft for 64 seconds and reaching a height of 9.8 feet, earning the team a $250,000 prize. Since then, Aerovelo has shifted its focus toward human-powered speed records and transportation innovation, with no recent updates on the Atlas project.
