Used Car of the Day: 1988 Ford Mustang

Ah, Fox bodies. Always popular among the enthusiast set. This one is a 1988 Ford Mustang with the notchback body style.

It's a stick and it's been converted to having rear disc brakes and five-lug wheels. It was a rolling chassis and the seller took the stock powertrain out of a 1990 MY donor car. It's an LX with the 5.0/five-point-slow -- which means it has the preferred powertrain/trim combo among Fox-body fans.

It has a coilover suspension, too.

If this one interests you, you can find it in Georgia for 13K. Click here for more.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

Picked up a 91 convertible once with the same ugly cowl hood. But got a deal on the car because it had hood pins and the owner forgot to lock them when he took the car on a test drive for another potential buyer. It caught air and flipped up, bending the whole cowl in. He knocked a ton off the price after that, so couldn't resist. Eventually had it fixed at a shop and did a lot of other work to the car myself. But never replaced it with the Cervini ram-air hood I'd picked up because was just too expensive to get it painted and installed.

    Ughh, Fox bodies.

The ugliest, econo-box looking Mustang and the build quality was suspect (rattles galore).
