QOTD: Can We Have Unlimited Speed On Rural Roads?

Arizona might do away with speed limits on rural roads.

American states have tried this before -- remember Montana and "reasonable and prudent"? It seemed like a good idea -- but how do we judge "reasonable and prudent"? Does it matter if the car is in good shape, or if the driver is driving in a manner that's safe, even at high speeds?

How does that standard work if someone fights a ticket? What about finding blame for a wreck?

You know what to do. Sound off below.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

There would be gunplay within a fortnight.

OTOH, I did remove the top speed limiter on my 200, so with better aero and 30+hp, i'm betting it would easily eclipse the 150mph-ish mid 80s M5 in top speed. Break 160 maybe? A v6 Sonata did over 150.

We need better driver training, more rigorous licensing requirements and meaningful vehicle inspection programs for this.
