Canadian Honda Owners Sue Over Head Gasket Issues and Engine Failures

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating Honda’s V6 engines for failures, but the automaker is now facing a lawsuit in Canada for issues with its turbo-fours. The case was filed in the Superior Court of Quebec, accusing Honda of selling vehicles with an engine design that allows coolant leaks and sometimes complete engine failure.

2025 Honda Civic

The case’s lead plaintiff is the owner of a 2016 Civic, who said her car’s engine had head gasket problems, despite having regular service. The claims are almost exactly the same as those made by another Civic owner in British Columbia earlier this year. Canadian courts aren’t always the fastest to resolve these issues, but they have been increasingly kind to consumers in recent times.

The defect relates to the head gasket material and tolerances in the cooling system. In some situations, the system may allow coolant to enter the combustion chamber, causing significant problems. Many owners said they’d taken their vehicles in for repeated servicing, and others say the problems occurred just after the warranty expired.

Honda Canada hasn’t recalled the vehicles or issued a technical service bulletin to guide techs through repairs. The lawsuit alleges that Honda continued selling the vehicles, knowing the problem existed, and if it’s successful, it could force the automaker to pay for repairs and other expenses incurred due to the issue.

Honda built two good models 39 years ago and you people act like they can do no wrong. 😉

Would you ride a motorcycle with today's yutes* on the road? I wouldn't.

      * "Yooooouths" -- My Cousin Vinny reference, it's not fun when I have to explain it.

    I love head gaskets.

Honda prides itself [used to] on being an engine company. Single worst engine I ever had in a piece of power equipment (pressure washer) had a Honda badge. Sample size = 1.

Worst lawn mower I ever owned was a Honda with a fragile engine. The thing vibrated like crazy.

  • Andarris Here in the Toronto area I haven't seen a 2006-2012 with intact rocker pannels for over two years now. I presume everywhere around the Great Lakes is the same ? They were super cheap dhring the first two years of the pandemic - could get one with less than 85K for around $6500 certified or a little higher mileage for $5000. Glad I skipped it, even in 2021 some of the 10's &11's were displaying corosion like you'd see on a 7 year older Impala, Camry or Accord. Also the mid-model switch to EPS made me balk at the few clean ones I found.

  • Big Al from Oz gidday mites how are yall feelin today? Want to have a barbie? We are right here gettin dee fire ready
  • Michael S6 The 3 Amigos better hope that the oil spike is short lived as 4-5 dollar a gallon gas would put a damper on their cash cows especially "Ford's strategic shift" of killing off the escape/Lincoln cousin. Most other automakers have a full line of vehicles with much better full economy. GM is sucking air and its Cadillac devision is mostly EV and geriatric line up of ICE cars and SUV's that were supposed to be phased out this year. The expensive gas may push shoppers toward EV but GM's horrible EV reliability is a barrier.
  • Tane94 I read the GM press release about first quarter sales 2026 vs 2025 and Buick is getting its butt kicked:Buick Total* 41,654 61,822 -32.6 The future is bleak for Buick.
