QOTD: What Are You Paying For Gas These Days?

Tim Healey

The war in Iran is likely to cause oil prices to rise, even as governments make attempts to increase supply.

It might not be affecting prices just yet -- and some places in this country tend to have pricy gas no matter what is happening when it comes to international geopolitics.

We won't do this too often -- we could do it every day -- but I wanted to check in and see if gas prices have risen, stayed the same, or fallen in your neighborhood.

Go ahead and sound off below. And please, please be civil. I have been nuking too many comments that veer into personal insults lately. And the banhammer is always at the ready.

With that in mind, sound off below.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

I'm ok if we skip over Libertarianism and have a little Anarchy.

Anyway, voting for Ds and Rs and then wishing you had something different is kind of like buying a new car with touch controls and *then* complaining to the manufacturer that you wanted buttons, isn't it?

My truck is back on the road now, sort of, mostly. Done bumming rides from my spouse in her vehicle which is also fixed, except the five new tire pressure sensors but I went and talked to the tire place about how that might work. Saw a Maserati while I was there (it was being explained to the owner, who was not Aquaman, probably, about how his tires are an unusual size and will require further sleuthing).

So it occurred to me that I have a sedan which has been sitting for awhile, and that sedan gets appreciably better fuel economy than my truck, possibly, so maybe it would be a good idea to get back on the repairs on that particular vehicle. (Plus, one can only maintain a weak work ethic for so long, trust me I know.) Plus I miss my car (sentimental fool, plus the weather is warming up, potentially).

The hood is closed but the intake is open, sort of, and the cowl panel is not installed, and we have continued to have various forms of precipitation over the last X months, and let me check, yes I still park outside, so genius me started to wonder if when I eventually started the vehicle up again, if ever, if it wouldn't be hydrolocked and cause some damage which I don't care to get into fixing. (A man has to know his limits.)

So today I jacked it up and removed the front tires and advanced the crank (from the wheelwell, because my sedan is a transverse V6 and not a longitudinal V8, this is not a perfect world, kid) in ye olde clockwise direction using a wrench while feeling for any obstructions but would I be able to tell, really? (My incredible arm strength plus mechanical advantage would probably rip through any number of engine components without me realizing, possibly.) I was too lazy to remove the spark plugs, because they aren't easy to get to, did I mention this is a transverse V6? And tilted at some weird angle, ask an engineer why they did that. Anyway I don't like redoing work for no good reason and those coils and plugs are brand-new (not counting the time spent sitting out here). And those crush washers, are they single-use, technically? So I used the wrench (22mm not 21mm, get it straight AI) and tried to take it easy, but my arms are amazing, really big beautiful arms.

Anyway that's a relief (the engine turned, more than once, maybe). I went ahead and loosened the engine mounts, because Step Next is to raise the engine in the vehicle to be able to remove the bolts standing between us and the water pump. Using a shorter bolt at the factory would have been way too complicated, ask Toyota. (Today's vocabulary word: "Serviceability" -- say it with me.)

Worst drivers award today as seen by me goes to Honda. One poor woman was weaving all over both lanes. Learn to drive, people. (Ayatoldya already.)

  • Andarris Here in the Toronto area I haven't seen a 2006-2012 with intact rocker pannels for over two years now. I presume everywhere around the Great Lakes is the same ? They were super cheap dhring the first two years of the pandemic - could get one with less than 85K for around $6500 certified or a little higher mileage for $5000. Glad I skipped it, even in 2021 some of the 10's &11's were displaying corosion like you'd see on a 7 year older Impala, Camry or Accord. Also the mid-model switch to EPS made me balk at the few clean ones I found.
  • Kjhkjlhkjhkljh kljhjkhjklhkjh I do not ever have delays. I only fly out of PDX or EUG to LAS or OAK and OGG then back .. have never been delayed in the last ?30-ish? trips to vegas/disneyland/maui/cruise ship vacations.... EUG has contract tsa so we never have any TSA delays. unsure which airports have PRIVATE contract TSA that is UNAFFECTED by the deadlock that i HOPE NEVER EVER END.
  • Big Al from Oz gidday mites how are yall feelin today? Want to have a barbie? We are right here gettin dee fire ready
  • Michael S6 The 3 Amigos better hope that the oil spike is short lived as 4-5 dollar a gallon gas would put a damper on their cash cows especially "Ford's strategic shift" of killing off the escape/Lincoln cousin. Most other automakers have a full line of vehicles with much better full economy. GM is sucking air and its Cadillac devision is mostly EV and geriatric line up of ICE cars and SUV's that were supposed to be phased out this year. The expensive gas may push shoppers toward EV but GM's horrible EV reliability is a barrier.
  • Tane94 I read the GM press release about first quarter sales 2026 vs 2025 and Buick is getting its butt kicked:Buick Total* 41,654 61,822 -32.6 The future is bleak for Buick.
