Tesla's $30,000 Cybercab Arrives, But Not for You
Tesla expects to start handing Cybercabs to customers before 2026 is out. Just don't expect many of them to end up in private driveways.
"In short, we're trying to get to customers by the end of this year, 2026," Vice President of Engineering Lars Moravy said on Wednesday's third-quarter earnings call. "Obviously we're producing them on the line in Texas, but all of those are currently going into our own internal robotaxi fleet."
That last part is the whole story. Tesla has built a few hundred Cybercabs so far, and every one of them is headed into the company's own robotaxi operation. The handful that reach private buyers will more or less function as beta testers. CEO Elon Musk, who once promised a Cybercab costing under $30,000, spent the call reframing what the thing even is.
"Cybercab is primarily going to be something that is offered as 'transport as a service.' Whereas our other cars will be more the cars you want to own, like the 3 and the Y, and the Roadster, obviously," Musk said. "The vast majority of the Cybercab stuff will be essentially Tesla-owned and transport as a service."
This is a notable shift. When the Cybercab was unveiled, the sales pitch leaned heavily on the idea that you could buy one, or snap up a Model 3 or Model Y, and send it out to earn its keep ferrying strangers on Tesla's ride-sharing app. Now Musk is describing the Cybercab as a service Tesla owns and runs itself, the way every other robotaxi operator already does.
The vehicle's missing steering wheel complicates the ownership question further. How, or whether, a private buyer could drive one remains unanswered. Tesla is already under federal investigation for running a vehicle that lacks certain federally mandated equipment.
Tesla currently offers paid rides in Austin, with Dallas expansion coming soon. For now, the robotaxi fleet gets the cars. The $30,000 Cybercab in your garage remains theoretical.

- Slavuta Is this Ok if I use OEM all weather floor mats? Yes, the ones that came with 2011 Mazda3 were not good. But the ones in 2017 Mazda6 are excellent. BTW, in that picture, Grand Cherokee on Kumho tires. Is this also an advert or just coincidence?
- Bar170111344 "GM was on track to spend $31.7 billion on compliance technology through 2031."I'll just mention, that expenditure would have gone into research and development, and that would have driven U.S. manufacturing innovation. On the industrial side, R&D is necessary for U.S. manufacturers to remain competitive in the world. It's absolutely no surprise China is running rings around us. The prospective $ savings GM is looking forward to hasn't impressed the stock market. Year-to-date return of -5.65%. -7.05% in the last month. PE 20:1, inflated by the falling share price. Not to be insulting by any stretch, but it has never been like Mary Barra to get out ahead of anything. She's not an innovator and not a risk taker. She's a good engineer.Honestly - in that industry, which I worked in for decades, being regulated is like having a security blanket. You can be mediocre, blame it on regulation, and still make a buck. And with the federal government now digging an even deeper moat around GM and Ford, it's clearly suppressing American innovation and excellence.

Tesla continues to put laps on the competition: No one can manufacture these at scale and at economic value except Tesla. The tinker toys running around Vegas and Phoenix don’t count.
Been in Austin for 2 weeks. I've seen these everywhere. Incidentally this is the best looking car Tesla currently makes
