The world is short on sedans, especially luxury ones. It's a crossover-crazed planet and we're just living on it. But a new report suggests that the Infiniti Q50 is set to return.

The struggling automaker could use a hit.

This follows on the heels of news that the Nissan Skyline, which is the Q50 in Japan, has a next-gen replacement on the way.

Nissan is producing a limited-edition performance model for the Japanese domestic market -- that will sort of mark the swan-song for the current generation of the rear-drive sedan. As part of the announcement, there's been confirmation that a next-gen car is coming, and Infiniti has also announced that there will be a rear-wheel drive sedan coming to its line, perhaps even with an available manual transmission.

So, connecting some dots -- it appears the next-generation Japanese-market Skyline sedan will be sold in North America as the next Infiniti Q50.

It's funny -- the Q50 got dumped so Infiniti could go all SUV, and now it may be back sooner rather than later.

If the Q50 returns, power could come from the Nissan Z's 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V6, perhaps tuned to make 450 horsepower.

Save the sedans, save the manuals.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

Why bother when Genesis by Hyundai offers stellar superlative sedans (SSS).

honestly...who cares? Has Infiniti made anything even remotely near a competitive product in any segment in the last 15 years?
