Jeep Canceled the Gladiator 4xe Before It Could Get Off the Ground

Last year, Jeep announced a plug-in hybrid 4xe version of the Gladiator pickup, but we’ve now learned that the automaker has pulled the plug on the off-roader. It recently told dealers that the truck would be canceled, saying that it would focus more on the features and accessories buyers want.


Jeep’s statement said, “The Jeep brand has already begun reinvesting funding to ensure the long-term growth of the Jeep Gladiator and will introduce even more customer-requested factory features, customization, and additional powertrain options in the near future.”


The Gladiator 4xe would have been Jeep’s third plug-in hybrid, following the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. The automaker’s PHEV system only offers around 20 miles of electric range in the Wrangler, and it has had quality issues since its release, so it’s not super surprising to hear this announcement. The PHEV powertrain does offer benefits off-road, giving the vehicles extra torque when they need it, but pricing is also an issue, as the 4xe models are considerably more expensive.

Despite those issues, the Wrangler 4xe is the best-selling PHEV in America, though Jeep’s parent company isn’t seeing the strong sales it needs to keep pushing forward with aggressive electrification efforts. Sister brand Ram recently canceled its all-electric pickup to focus on a range-extended variant, and Dodge has struggled with demand for the electric Charger Daytona.

    @RedApple2 - A lot of people do. Just like a lot of people track a $100k car in an environment that breaks a lot of components and has a high chance of breaking things.

      and then they go on the internet and whine and moan.

      Most GTI buyers go mod and tune the thing to within an inch of its life, and talk about how much the end up working on it. Yeah, no kidding.

    The thing is, this product was on the outside of nearly every circle you could add to a Venn diagram. Cancelling it now is better for the business than cancelling it in a year or two.

  • Andarris Here in the Toronto area I haven't seen a 2006-2012 with intact rocker pannels for over two years now. I presume everywhere around the Great Lakes is the same ? They were super cheap dhring the first two years of the pandemic - could get one with less than 85K for around $6500 certified or a little higher mileage for $5000. Glad I skipped it, even in 2021 some of the 10's &11's were displaying corosion like you'd see on a 7 year older Impala, Camry or Accord. Also the mid-model switch to EPS made me balk at the few clean ones I found.

I only fly out of PDX or EUG to LAS or OAK and OGG then back .. have never been delayed in the last ?30-ish? trips to vegas/disneyland/maui/cruise ship vacations.... EUG has contract tsa so we never have any TSA delays. unsure which airports have PRIVATE contract TSA that is UNAFFECTED by the deadlock that i HOPE NEVER EVER END.

  • Michael S6 The 3 Amigos better hope that the oil spike is short lived as 4-5 dollar a gallon gas would put a damper on their cash cows especially "Ford's strategic shift" of killing off the escape/Lincoln cousin. Most other automakers have a full line of vehicles with much better full economy. GM is sucking air and its Cadillac devision is mostly EV and geriatric line up of ICE cars and SUV's that were supposed to be phased out this year. The expensive gas may push shoppers toward EV but GM's horrible EV reliability is a barrier.
