Hertz and Amazon Team Up to Sell Used Cars

Rental car companies have been a decent source for reasonably priced used cars for a long time now, but Hertz is branching out to sell vehicles in other ways. It’s teaming up with Amazon to sell preowned vehicles, which aligns with Amazon Autos’ move into used car sales.

Amazon started its Autos program last year to sell used and certified preowned vehicles, and it has dealer partners in more than 130 cities across the country. The first vehicles in the program will be offered around Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Seattle, and the companies plan to expand to 45 more cities.

While the jokes about rental cars being trashed are based on the truth, used cars from one of the major rental companies can be a great way to save cash. They’re usually well-maintained, and many retain their factory warranties. That said, it’s always good to get an inspection, and the rental car flag on a vehicle’s title can complicate resale values.

For Hertz, the Amazon partnership opens up new revenue opportunities at a time when it needs them most. The company has struggled with its electric vehicle fleet, and recent moves to use AI-powered damage sensors have resulted in countless upset customers.

-smirks- If Amazon sends me two vehicles instead of just one like I paid for, do I get to keep both?

Better question - can you return it after you use it at Whole Foods?

  • EBFlex No....you can find plenty of used "fun" cars that are very reasonable with low miles. What does give me pause is the outrageous insurance and yearly registration fees. I shouldn't have to pay for a full year of road use when I can't use the car for half the year. Another factor is interest rates. The dolt that runs the fed is keeping them high for purely political reasons. They need to come down ASAP.
  • 1995 SC I actually really like these. I love the Busso V6. And I will continue to admire them in someone else's driveway like all Alfas. I really want a 4c, but I don't quite hate myself enough
  • 1995 SC I actually know a guy with one of these. Coolest Tercel ever. I don't mean anything derogatory by that.
  • 1995 SC A Miata can be had for under 30. GTIs are still reasonable as is the Jetta GLI. GR86 is reasonable. Plenty of choices out there. If you look at things like the Mustang now versus even back in the 90s sure, it costs more, but it's performance envelope is also vastly higher.
  • 1995 SC No. It gets great gas mileage.
