Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

It was Nissan's competitor with the Honda Fit and it's really easy to mistake one for the other at a glance.
Except for its tiny battery needing routine trickle charging if not driven for a while, our Fit has been flawless and I can't imagine the Versa to be any different. They and the Fit were built back when J-cars could be assumed most reliable.
the S trim should have the much more reliable 4 speed automatic if my memory serves me correct. The upscale trims for 2008 (SL) had the CVT that would be more worrisome in a car this old. TIming chain 1.8 I4 and 4 speed auto should be dependable with service records to back it up. The extra wide seats always made this a preferred choice for bigger folks and road trip types. When I sold these back in the mid 2000s, it was confusing for customer to drive a Sentra and then get a better seat and more cargo space in what was supposed to be the "basic" Nissan product. This generation Versa was an exceptional value in the 1 to 2 year old used car market for savvy buyers at the time. Under 10k grand for a 1 or 2 year old used car with AC and power windows locks and aux/cd player was a steal when the same size car from other japanese brands would be 2 to 3 thousand more at minimum.
