You've seen the new 2026 Jeep Cherokee and heard about the specs. Now, what do you think?

Is it a hit or a miss? Will it compete in a brutally tough market segment? Is it priced right? Is the decision to be hybrid-only, at least for now, the right one?

Yes, it's a belated QOTD today because I wanted to ask about the Jeep and we had to wait for the embargo.

You guys know what to do.

Sound off below.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

first off: this is an even more horrible insult to the cherokee name than the kl was.

but just so we are all aware: cafe makes the xj impossible today. it has a shorter wheelbase and track than the new prius. it would be in an even more stringent footprint category than a vehicle that needs to get +49.5 mpg combined (i did the math a while back based on graphs, the xj would need ~60mpg this year). even if you somehow put a plug in hybrid system efficient enough in it, you would also lose tons of interior space and aesthetics to crash structures and aerodynamics. not to mention weight. the government (as well as automakers and consumer demand i will admit) make the small, light, holistically efficient, and specialized people's cars of before impossible.
