Ford Reveals Name for New Electric Pickup Truck: Fathom
Ford’s been teasing the arrival of its first-ever midsize electric pickup truck for months now, revealing today that the name of the latest member of the “Ford Tough” family is Fathom.
Yes, the jokes write themselves, such as “I cannot Fathom why they’d build another electric truck after what happened with the F-150 Lightning.” However, what it reinforces is that the automaker realizes that EVs aren’t going away and the first automaker to produce a viable, well-received midsize electric pickup will win big.
Plus it’s the first vehicle based off Ford’s new Universal Electric Vehicle platform. The company’s invested more than $2 billion in its Louisville, Kentucky plant to begin producing UEV-based vehicles there. The Fathom is the first.
For the early adopters, the company will begin taking preorders early next year for pickup with a starting price of $28,350. First deliveries are expected in the second half of 2027. The automaker notes the pricing is right “in the heart” of the affordable EV market — as well as the midsize truck segment. The question is what do you get for just under $30K including $1,595 in destination fees? Technology.
“Every Fathom truck will be equipped with the hardware necessary for Ford’s next generation of BlueCruise capability,” the company noted in a release. “Once activated, BlueCruise is a driver assist feature that provides a hands-off, eyes-on driving experience when driving on designated highways called hands-free Blue Zones.
“The electric truck’s next generation BlueCruise integration with Apple Maps will deliver a more seamless on-ramp to off-ramp experience. It will also maintain compatibility with standard CarPlay and Android Auto. Fathom will also have a digital car key and bi-directional power capability.”
Ford says the new truck will have more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4, a large, high-resolution touch screen, bidirectional power capability, digital key, as well as a frunk and bed. The Fathom seats five adults; however, no details were available for range or battery size, just that it’s the standard-range battery. However, Ford executives previously said it will get more than 300 miles on a full charge — but not from the standard battery.

- Slavuta Is this Ok if I use OEM all weather floor mats? Yes, the ones that came with 2011 Mazda3 were not good. But the ones in 2017 Mazda6 are excellent. BTW, in that picture, Grand Cherokee on Kumho tires. Is this also an advert or just coincidence?
- Bar170111344 "GM was on track to spend $31.7 billion on compliance technology through 2031."I'll just mention, that expenditure would have gone into research and development, and that would have driven U.S. manufacturing innovation. On the industrial side, R&D is necessary for U.S. manufacturers to remain competitive in the world. It's absolutely no surprise China is running rings around us. The prospective $ savings GM is looking forward to hasn't impressed the stock market. Year-to-date return of -5.65%. -7.05% in the last month. PE 20:1, inflated by the falling share price. Not to be insulting by any stretch, but it has never been like Mary Barra to get out ahead of anything. She's not an innovator and not a risk taker. She's a good engineer.Honestly - in that industry, which I worked in for decades, being regulated is like having a security blanket. You can be mediocre, blame it on regulation, and still make a buck. And with the federal government now digging an even deeper moat around GM and Ford, it's clearly suppressing American innovation and excellence.

And where exactly does the article state why the name Ranchero was skipped over for Fathom?
Great, just what the world needs. Another "hands off" vehicle.
