Camera Software Bug Drives Recall Of Almost Half A Million Volvos
Volvo is recalling almost half a million vehicles for an issue that could cause the backup camera to blink when in use. In one of the largest actions so far in 2025, the automaker recalled 413,151 vehicles in the U.S. and almost 41,000 in Canada.
The problem is caused by a software glitch that causes the camera display to go blank when the vehicle is placed into reverse. Some vehicles may also generate a fault code, which would prevent the camera from displaying for the remainder of the driving cycle. When the issue occurs, the driver may see a “Camera is temporarily not available” message on the touchscreen.
Several models are impacted by the problem:
- 2023-2025 Volvo S60
- 2022-2025 Volvo S90
- 2023-2025 Volvo V60
- 2023-2025 Volvo V60 Cross Country
- 2022 Volvo V90
- 2022-2025 Volvo V90 Cross Country
- 2021-2025 Volvo XC40
- 2022-2025 Volvo XC60
- 2023-2025 Volvo XC90
- 2022-2025 Volvo C40
Because the problem is with the software driving the camera and not the hardware itself, the fix is as easy as an over-the-air software update. Owners uncomfortable with the process can visit a dealer, and Volvo will begin notifying customers by late June. The automaker will also reimburse any out-of-pocket expenses incurred prior to the recall repair.

- Andarris Here in the Toronto area I haven't seen a 2006-2012 with intact rocker pannels for over two years now. I presume everywhere around the Great Lakes is the same ? They were super cheap dhring the first two years of the pandemic - could get one with less than 85K for around $6500 certified or a little higher mileage for $5000. Glad I skipped it, even in 2021 some of the 10's &11's were displaying corosion like you'd see on a 7 year older Impala, Camry or Accord. Also the mid-model switch to EPS made me balk at the few clean ones I found.
- Kjhkjlhkjhkljh kljhjkhjklhkjh I do not ever have delays. - Big Al from Oz gidday mites how are yall feelin today? Want to have a barbie? We are right here gettin dee fire ready
- Michael S6 The 3 Amigos better hope that the oil spike is short lived as 4-5 dollar a gallon gas would put a damper on their cash cows especially "Ford's strategic shift" of killing off the escape/Lincoln cousin. Most other automakers have a full line of vehicles with much better full economy. GM is sucking air and its Cadillac devision is mostly EV and geriatric line up of ICE cars and SUV's that were supposed to be phased out this year. The expensive gas may push shoppers toward EV but GM's horrible EV reliability is a barrier.
- Tane94 I read the GM press release about first quarter sales 2026 vs 2025 and Buick is getting its butt kicked:Buick Total* 41,654 61,822 -32.6 The future is bleak for Buick.

A lot of Volvo and Polestar 2 models share this ailment, mostly sporadic and easily mitigated by shifting out of reverse or touching a camera control on the touchscreen. Since the law requires backup cameras be functional, a recall was required. Volvo and Polestar tried a few software updates in the past year but were unable to solve the issue before a recall was issued. An OTA software release looks to be planned for mid-June.
Most owners aren't "embarrassed" by software bugs. That sounds like a personal issue.
Mine’s a ‘22, but I imagine my fix would be using my mirrors. But again, mine pre-dates the issue.
