Used Car of the Day: 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII

Apparently, it's Lincoln-Mercury week around these parts.

We had that Mercury Cougar that created a stir earlier this week, and now we fast forward from the muscle-car era to the days of my youth for this 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII.

I had a friend in high school who drove an older Mark VIII, and I seem to remember him and other Lincoln aficionados being a bit dismissive of the more rounded-off versions. Or maybe it was auto writers -- I cannot recall. Anyway, here we have one that the seller bought in order to pull the engine for a Fox-body Mustang (I like this person already). Instead of pulling the engine, though, the seller decided he or she liked driving it.

Now it is up for sale with 163,000 miles on it. It needs work -- the paint is needs attention and the headlights need to be replaced. The interior is worn and the car leaks oil, and the check engine light is on for a misfire and lean condition.

There are some good things here, according to the seller -- the suspension airbags have been replaced and the wheels and tires are new. So are the coils and plug wires and air filter, and there are new brake parts. There are also LED bulbs for the headlamps and some of the upholstery has been updated.

Click here to see more, the asking price is $2,800.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

What are your most and least favorite aspects? Never owned one, but just kind of like them.

I was a young engineer at Ford in 1991, feeling very privileged to work on a team located inside the proving grounds. I remember seeing a group of people clustered against the windows at the side of the building abutting the high-speed track. As I joined them, I saw they were watching two very sleek coupes take a couple laps. Minutes later, the cars were in our parking lot, and everyone rushed outside to take our first look at the undisguised 1993 Mark VIII.
  • TheMrFreeze JD Power's surveys mean nothing to me. We live in an age where we have unprecedented access to actual, relevant data, and by that I mean working mechanics who see all of these cars up close and are willing to share what's good and what's crap. The wife drives a Fiat 500...had I listened to JD Power or Consumer Reports or whatnot we never would have bought one, but more than one mechanic I talked to said they were pretty reliable cars. Bought one, guess what...it's been reliable.
  • Akear Mary Barra has little or no feel for the market. This is yet another reason why GM will perform better when she retires. Barra's track record at GM is about as good as Biden debate performance last week.
  • Peter Nissan should hire someone to explain basic economics to their Board of Directors.
  • Jeff China now has the manufacturing capacity to produce 1/3 of the World's vehicles but under the current geopolitical environment this will not happen. As someone above stated all bets are off if China invades Taiwan. What many don't understand is that China plans for the long term and can wait it out till the geopolitical environment becomes less hostile toward China. I am not endorsing Chinese trade just stating that China is preparing for the future.
  • 3-On-The-Tree Im glad it was fixed in time that would’ve been a huge pain and inconvenience to you if it had broke. My 2009 C6 Corvette LS3 has been great with no recalls. My 1985 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 actually had a recall for the gas tank and seat belt warning stickers about 10 years go and Toyota fixed it, got a new tank, fuel lines and stickers.
