No More Focus ST: Hatchback's Death Will Leave Ford Without a Small Car In Europe

Ford has been selling hot hatches for more than four decades, but the automaker’s time in the segment is over. A UK executive from the company recently confirmed that it had stopped taking Focus ST orders, saying that all units through the end of production had been reserved.


Orders have stopped, but Ford expects dealers to have Focus ST inventory across most European markets for a while. However, once the supply is exhausted, the Blue Oval will be without a car on the continent, other than the very rare Mustang. The muscle car’s future in Europe is up in the air, though, as rapidly tightening emissions threaten to upend Ford’s ability to sell a V8-powered sports car.


Ford’s partnership with Volkswagen may yield new electrified cars in the future, as the two have dropped several hints about such a release in the past. That said, there’s no telling which direction the two might head.

The Blue Oval’s European sales have been on the decline, and Ford’s decision to cut cars has hastened the decline. The automaker saw just 149,601 deliveries in the EU, the UK, and other countries in April, while Volkswagen sold more than twice that amount, moving more than 488,000 cars. Hyundai and Kia both beat Ford in Europe, too, selling more than 180,000 and 170,000 units, respectively.

    At least blue oval VeeDub EVs wouldn't have to be shipped to Europe. It's beginning to be a supply chain problem.

    ford should never given up on cars ! Not everyone wants an SUV or EV !

  • Bd2 Hyundai will either do a production version of the Boulder or a different design for a BoF SUV.Since they are doing a proper pickup, they aren't going to not take advantage of the economies of scale to do a companion BoF SUV, especially as it would be for world markets like Australia, South Africa, the Middle East, etc.

  • Golden2husky I'd love to see it happen! Even though I'm bullish on EVs, these cars would be better served with traditional engines. Part of what makes the ponycar experience is the sound and vibrations of a gas engine. Even if the EV is faster, the lack of traditional feedback would turn off a lot of buyers. Me included.
  • Program personally no. im sick of the horsepower/performance bloat that has gone along with general bloat in cars. we need to go back to 90s power levels (and size and weight for that matter) bc the amount of power factory performance cars have these days are completely unusable on the road and the amount of power in regular cars is too much for the ahem.... lets say "average" to be nice.... driver. manufacturers should be getting back to what is actually fun, affordable, and what people want (within reason). and overall, this is not the right time for a horsepower war. we know how this is all going. gas is gonna get more expensive, the camaro and mustang are gonna get more expensive. dodge is doing... something? most people cant even afford a "basic" new car. it makes no sense. so yeah its probably going to happen.

Further reducing the settlement to currency they could find in their couches. This is not even a slap on the wrist. Worse in 10 years the deal ends and they can lock the programing and ECU's back up.
