Bad Software Update Sends 86 Mach-Es Back to the Shop
Ford has a small but pointed problem on its hands: a software fix that may have created the very kind of trouble software fixes are supposed to prevent. The company is recalling 86 Mustang Mach-E from the 2023-2025 model years over Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) software that can misreport how much charge is actually in the pack.
The affected cars reportedly received a new BECM software update during a prior repair. That update is the culprit. Cars running it might show the wrong charge reading on the gauge, or, through a distinct fault, let the pack run too hot.
Neither outcome is trivial. If the true state-of-charge sits lower than the gauge claims, the Mach-E can hit unexpected power limitation and eventually lose forward propulsion entirely — which is exactly the sort of surprise you don't want in a merge lane. The overheating scenario raises the risk of a battery fire. Ford says it is not aware of any accidents, injuries, or fires tied to the condition.
This is a narrow recall. Only 86 units are involved, all Mustang Mach-E crossovers built between July 3rd, 2023, and August 26th, 2025. That the trigger was a repair-time software update rather than a factory error explains the tiny count — this is a cleanup of cars that already came in for service and left with the wrong code loaded.
Dealers will update the BECM software at no charge. Owner notifications began going out on September 9th, 2026, under Ford reference number 26S68. Owners waiting on paperwork can reach Ford Customer Service at 1-866-436-7332, or contact NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or via www.nhtsa.gov. The FoMoCo recall number is 26S68.
A recall born from a botched service update is a particular kind of embarrassment — the sort where the medicine and the disease share a diagnosis code. This one traces back to a software update applied during a prior service visit.

- YaMoBeThere This is an egregiously bad AI generated article, the middle of the article is repeated twice... but yea go ahead and nitpick about my comment pointing that out
- Slavuta Is this Ok if I use OEM all weather floor mats? Yes, the ones that came with 2011 Mazda3 were not good. But the ones in 2017 Mazda6 are excellent. BTW, in that picture, Grand Cherokee on Kumho tires. Is this also an advert or just coincidence?
- Bar170111344 "GM was on track to spend $31.7 billion on compliance technology through 2031."I'll just mention, that expenditure would have gone into research and development, and that would have driven U.S. manufacturing innovation. On the industrial side, R&D is necessary for U.S. manufacturers to remain competitive in the world. It's absolutely no surprise China is running rings around us. The prospective $ savings GM is looking forward to hasn't impressed the stock market. Year-to-date return of -5.65%. -7.05% in the last month. PE 20:1, inflated by the falling share price. Not to be insulting by any stretch, but it has never been like Mary Barra to get out ahead of anything. She's not an innovator and not a risk taker. She's a good engineer.Honestly - in that industry, which I worked in for decades, being regulated is like having a security blanket. You can be mediocre, blame it on regulation, and still make a buck. And with the federal government now digging an even deeper moat around GM and Ford, it's clearly suppressing American innovation and excellence.
- Jks168824641 Mercedes, 2023 GLC 300’s start/stop feature is so smooth and seamless that I hardly notice it. I really appreciate it in slow traffic or drive through lanes for fast food
- SCE to AUX While the spirit of this basic car is what people say they want, they buy $70k trucks instead because that's the only thing on dealer lots. /s

Get some coffee while you are at the dealership.
Or bring your own coffee, and help out the dealer principal's children.
If Ford Motor Company needs some coding expertise, try the new hires over at the train station. Or the Socialists over in Long Beach or Palo Alto. (Lots of options here.)
If your Ford Mustang Mach-E is your Forever Car, ask the dealer not to park your vehicle beside any hybrid vehicles -- those things are a fire risk. 🔥
Who wrote this article? Why won't you tell us?
Following up, since the recall website is back up:
Ford has 75 recalls for the year and is, once again, leading the industry.
Second place is FCA with 35
Third place is GM/Toyota with 23
should we call these Mustang Mach-E - GR86?? Like "Group Recall 86"
