QOTD: What's The Best Song About Driving?

Over the weekend I trekked out to my parent's house for Easter. It's an hour's drive, minimum, and the return trip took almost double that due to rain and, according to Apple Maps, an accident on the interstate.

I make the trip a fair amount, and I also visit friends or attend personal/professional appointment in the suburbs often. This, plus the airport runs for the travel this job requires, plus the occasional drive to Detroit for events, plus the fact that I can't adequately test a vehicle if it's just sitting in the garage -- this means I drive a lot.

The Perfect Song for People That Love Cars but Hate Their Spouse

Driving songs are an intensely personal thing and can be influenced as much by your taste in music as your preferred style of motoring. For some, nothing but the most frantic electronic dance music will suffice. Though others may find themselves requiring classic rock or hair metal to get into the groove – perhaps with a hint of vintage R&B for cruising. Whatever your particular brand of ear poison happens to be, there’s a good chance that your significant other won’t appreciate the noises coming out of the speakers as much as you do and may even resent the massive amount of attention you’ve given to your automobile generally.

Assuming you haven’t left that person already, and they have a decent sense of humor, there’s a song you absolutely must consider adding to your driving mix.

Stolen Cassette Deck Karma Goes Around, Comes Around

One thing that really sucked about the pre-MP3 era was that it was a huge hassle to get your car a cheap source of music that didn’t sound terrible. As I gather components to set up my Dodge A100 Hell Project with an ironic 8-track setup, I’m forced to recall the hot cassette deck that was more or less forced into my not-so-willing hands back in 1982.

  • Forward Observer The last time I had a door off my truck I hung it from my Little Giant ladder. But I was only replacing the hinge pins.I'm sorry if this sounds smarmy or smug, I am working on my people skills. (My therapist says I have a long way to go to catch up with some of you.) Would smarmy and smug come in handy if I worked for an automotive dealership? (I wonder.)
  • Arthur Dailey Auto 'journalists' should stop referencing the average new car purchase price and instead report on the mean price. We all understand that the glue of luxury vehicles and full size pickups inflate the average price. For me, 'affordable' hovers around the $35k mark.Under current N.A. standards, hatchbacks, stations wagons and non-luxury coupes are basically a lost cause.Personally I would like to see Canada convert to accepting vehicles that have passed the European standards, rather than adhering only to N.A. standards. That would allow for the importation of vehicles such as Dacias, Skodas, and yes more Fiats. Also some models for Japanese and Korean manufacturers that currently are not sold in North America. It may even help Mitsubishi in the Canadian market and allow for the return of Suzuki. Having more small, affordable vehicles available is not a bad thing.
  • The original ToolGuy™ Doubt we will see any new vehicle in the low 20s unless it is an EV and Chinese but wouldn't count on that happening. We have brand new vehicles sold today in the low 20s including the Hyundai Venue that starts at $20,550.
