Used Car of the Day: 2013 Dodge Dart

"What's this," you ask. "A Dodge Dart? How is that an interesting choice for used car of the day?"

My rebuttal is that I don't see a 2013 Dodge Dart with a manual transmission in the forums very often, whereas my other choices for today are all models I use often.

I was on the press launch for the reborn Dart back in the day, and I still remember thinking that the car wasn't bad, necessarily, but it wasn't going to be good enough to really challenge the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. I also remember finding the stick-shift fairly entertaining to drive, but there was a missed opportunity for true sport.

That brings us to today's car -- it apparently runs and drives well enough and has had a lot of maintenance done recently. It is, however, aging with cosmetic issues and nearly 200K miles.

So, bearing that in mind, I see what could be a cheap commuter car or perhaps a first car for your teen -- if your teen can drive a stick.

If this has your interest, it's for sale in Wisconsin for $4,000. Click here for more.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

Actually that's not too bad as long as you have the next $5-10 it will need in recon[ditioning]. Years ago the R107s were always $10K (in pre-2008 dollars) for avg condition all day every day, it was madness. If one has money sloshing around (after proper investments of course), an R129 500SL/SL500 may be a nice buy and hold antique going into 2030 (I'd skip the V12 due to NLA and I6 due to it sucking).
