Rivian Recalls R1S and R1T for Potential ADAS Issue
Hands-free driver-assistance tech has gotten a lot better in recent times, but it’s still not capable of driving a vehicle without human input, no matter how much marketing you hear to the contrary. Rivian is recalling some vehicles with its hands-free system for an issue that could prevent it from recognizing other cars on the road.
Rivian’s recall impacts 24,214 R1S and R1T models from the 2025 model year running a software version earlier than 2025.18.30. Recall documentation states that vehicles equipped with the earlier software versions may misclassify other vehicles on the road, limiting its ability to alert drivers and prevent a crash.
Rivian said that in one instance, the driver of a 2025 R1S SUV failed to maintain adequate, responsible control of the vehicle due to the system misclassifying an obstacle at low speeds. The driver also failed to brake, causing a low-speed collision. The vehicle remained drivable after the accident and there were no injuries.
While the recall is just now coming out, Rivian noted that more than 99 percent of the affected vehicle population has already had a software update to remedy the issue. Owners will be notified by early November, but there’s a good chance they’ll have already received an over-the-air update notification with the fix.
