Question of the Day: Can Hybrids Save GM?

So now that Mary Barra and the rest of the executive leadership has figured out that hybrids are more than a passing fad, they’ve elected to commit $750 million to renovate its plant in Lansing, Michigan to start building some.

Currently, GM’s only hybrid is … the Corvette. Yup. And that’s not to save gas, it’s to cut time off its zero-to-60 mph time really. Really, not the worst hybrid concept by any stretch, but not what most people think of when they consider hybrids.

The automaker plans to build hybrid versions of the Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia, which is a great place to start. Dealers have been screaming for hybrids for a while now and GM’s market share has dropped nearly a full point since the start of this year, falling from 17.4 percent to 16.6 percent.

With demand for hybrids continuing to rise has GM made the right decision or is this too little too late? Let us know.

What's taking so long for the Equinox hybrid? The current generation launched in China with a hybrid system, all GM had to do was certify it for the US emissions.

Mary dropped the ball by not having more hybrid vehicles available this year. But the GM Board keeps rewarding her incompetence with stock options and a multi-million $ salary.

  • Slavuta Listening how great Miata is very tiring at this point. At these prices having a toy car is too much. And miata is not good for one car ownership. Meanwhile Harley just came out with a nice $6000 400cc Bike. Cheap, open air..
  • 6.2deadlifters get rid of all screens, all touch components and all automatics, then block cell 'data' (not voice) when not in park and watch the accident rates drop like a rock
  • Jpolicke It's so exciting to watch our two largest automakers competing for top honors! Go for it GM, there's still time to catch Ford.
  • Golden2husky It was always about the bean counters. Any part with mechanical connections - accelerator, shifter, parking brake for example, all require a person to connect one end of the control to another part on the car. That connection also has to be designed so that no further adjustment is needed once connected. Hence all those items being electrical now...same guy connecting systems to the harness now just has a few more. While I'm ok with the gas and parking brake, I prefer a traditional shifter. I'm still not thrilled with all the touch stuff in my Honda. Frankly, I choose to take the old Acura unless we need the extra room...
  • Forward Air Controller General Motors recalled 67,380 of its electric vehicles over a software defect that can briefly stop braking while the car is movingso, these software-defined vehicles are just the BOMB, aren't they?Internal testing reproduced the glitch"So we just went ahead and fixed the glitch."
