Lousy Monday: General Motors Laid Off More than 1,000 Salaried Workers

Mondays are almost never fun, but more than 1,000 salaried GM employees are having an especially bad start to the week. This morning, the automaker announced layoffs that will impact around 1.3 percent of its global workforce.

A spokesperson told CNBC, “As we build GM’s future, we must simplify for speed and excellence, make bold choices, and prioritize the investments that will have the greatest impact. As a result, we’re reducing certain teams within the Software and Services organization. We are grateful to those who helped establish a strong foundation that positions GM to lead moving forward.”

Sources said the automaker’s layoffs would affect around 600 employees at its tech campus in Warren, Michigan. GM is pursuing cost cuts as many in the industry worry about a downturn. The automaker’s software division has been in the news recently, as it decided to remove Apple CarPlay from its vehicles in favor of in-house tech. That move came with some hiccups, however, as the Chevrolet Blazer EV faced delays early in its production run due to software glitches.

This sort of instability will likely become more common as more vehicles become connected. The so-called “software-defined vehicle” lets automakers remotely update tech features, but it also opens the door for subscription and other paid services that could nickel-and-dime new vehicle owners over time.

Late to this party BUT, per CHINA Update, the Chinese buyer has turned from foreign to domestic brands with a move also in status. Companies that were making Billions in profits every year in China suddenly aren't. If sales fall off a cliff so do jobs. Think GM was only #2 behind VW(?) there.
  • Namesakeone It should be a name that evoques the wild west, that emphasizes the go-anywhere nature of how an SUV should be used. Something like a wild animal, maybe something like a horse. I've got it! How about . . . Mustang! Oh, wait. They already did that, didn't they?
  • Slavuta There Used to be Pontiac Trans Sport.... That "Trans Sport" part has a totally new meaning these days
  • 210delray You need to change the headline -- it's a 2025 model.
  • Jeff How about Aspire for a new subcompact crossover from Ford because it aspires to be bigger and its buyers would aspire for a better vehicle if they could afford it.
  • Jeff Carlos Travares wants to cut costs by 1/3. I don't see Chrysler or Dodge surviving too much longer especially since they are being literally starved for product. The success of the new Charger could extend Dodge a few more years but a failure might be a quick end to Dodge. I could see Stellantis moving more manufacturing for Jeep and Ram to Mexico which I believe will eventually be the only surviving brands of the old Chrysler. As for the Durango if it continues it will not be for too many more years it is an outdated product that I doubt will be redesigned especially when Jeep has a comparable product. Stellantis needs to address the high dealer inventory level by giving better incentives and low interest rates to clear excessive inventory.
