Ford Dealers Get Preview of Four-Door and Safari-Style Mustang Variants

Ford might be expanding the Mustang brand to include a four-door coupe and a safari-style off-road model. That’s the news coming out of the automaker’s recent dealer meeting in Las Vegas, according to attendees who shared details with Automotive News.

The source said they saw a rendering of a four-door coupe, which some noted was named the Mach 4. Ford CEO Jim Farley also hinted at a new off-road Baja model, showing images of a lifted Mustang with off-road tires. Two other Mustang models, an RTR-tuned four-cylinder and manual-equipped V8, also made appearances.

Ford has pressed forward with new Mustang variants when other automakers pull back on gas muscle cars. Chevy discontinued the Camaro, and Dodge no longer sells the Challenger or Charger, leaving Ford with the only pony car on sale. The company ruffled feathers when it named the Mustang Mach-E, but the situation has calmed as newer models rolled out.

Vehicle previews at the event also included a compact van running on the Maverick platform. It could arrive as early as next year as a replacement for the Transit Connect van, which Ford recently discontinued.

Of course, new gas vehicles don’t mean that Ford has given up on electrification. It’s still planning a handful of new electric models riding on a lower-cost platform. The meeting was one of the more positive dealer gatherings in recent memory, with one telling Automotive News that, “It was the first good meeting in five years as far as being positive and focusing on the future. It was awesome.”

They may as well call the 4-door and wagon versions Falcon, and get it over with.

I'll take mine in Darth Vader black, please. But with tasteful wheels.
  • Cprescott How is it that I have been driving nearly 45 years and have had no need for a touchscreen car tablet center screen? A co-worker had noted how well I can park backing up and asked if I had a screen in my car for that. I remarked, "no, I have side view / rear mirrors".
  • Cprescott Once a practical and simple vehicle now looks like it has been in the water for a few months and is bloated and hideous. Typical Toyoduh garbage designed to make us puke by looking at it.
