F-150 Owners Sue Ford Over Coyote V8 Oil Consumption Issues

A group of Ford F-150 owners is suing the automaker over claims that the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine burns more oil than it should. They’ve filed a class-action lawsuit in Michigan, but the owners come from nine states.

The lawsuit claims the F-150’s owner’s manual contains incorrect information about the truck’s oil consumption and how often the oil needs to be topped off. They also say that the truck’s oil life monitor sometimes illuminates far earlier than expected. Unfortunately, the problem is still present with regular oil checks and changes, as it reportedly leaks inside the engine.

Excess oil consumption impacts fuel economy and can reduce the engine’s performance. It can also cause carbon buildup over time, which can damage the engine. The suit states that the engine oil control system allows oil to pass into the combustion chamber, where it is burned off, creating carbon deposits.

The suit also alleges that Ford was aware of the oil consumption issues but hid the defect from customers and avoided a recall. It also says that some dealers refused to fix the engine, even under warranty.

A dozen plaintiffs have joined the suit. The owners all own trucks from between the 2018 and 2019 model year equipped with the Coyote V8.

Chevy V8's are bad for oil consumption. They list what is normal consumption and define normal driving as an empty box/no towing, and city driving. Last time I checked, Ford had more robust parameters.

Is this the aluminum block 5 liter that they coated the bores with some fancy ceramic? I almost bought one but was leery of that technology.

  • 1995 SC I actually really like these. I love the Busso V6. And I will continue to admire them in someone else's driveway like all Alfas. I really want a 4c, but I don't quite hate myself enough
  • 1995 SC I actually know a guy with one of these. Coolest Tercel ever. I don't mean anything derogatory by that.
  • 1995 SC A Miata can be had for under 30. GTIs are still reasonable as is the Jetta GLI. GR86 is reasonable. Plenty of choices out there. If you look at things like the Mustang now versus even back in the 90s sure, it costs more, but it's performance envelope is also vastly higher.
  • 1995 SC No. It gets great gas mileage.
  • ChicagoBhoy I was fortunate enough to buy a base C8 last year (told myself I was spending part of my children's inheritance.) I felt, for what I received, that it was a relative bargain. I feel incredibly lucky to own the car, which I only drove around 500 miles per month in my first year of retirement. I am living a cliche, but the car is a joy and, for me, worth every penny.
