Used Car of the Day: 2006 Pontiac GTO

The reborn Pontiac GTO should've been a rousing success for General Motors, but alas, it wasn't.

Still, it wasn't a bad car -- the failure had more to with marketing, Pontiac's overall struggles, and not making a few small adjustments to a car brought over from Down Under.

If this Aussie turned American appeals to you, as it does to me, you can get your mitts on this 2006 Pontiac GTO.

This Minnesota-based ride is up for sale for $27,000. It's a manual and one of only 475 produced with this build combo.

It's stock with no mods and our seller says it's been garage kept and never seen snow. The miles are low at 28K.

It appears the only flaw is a faulty driver's-door lock actuator.

If you're interested in this ride -- and I would be -- give it a look-see here.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

  • Oberkanone Great platform. Poor execution. If only this was styled appropriately to evoke "GTO".
  • FreedMike The guy who brought up the example of the used 4Runner being priced comparably to a new one nails the problem with the "most reliable used cars" - they're almost always reliably overpriced. By the time you factor in the repairs that even the best used cars will need within a couple of years, you might as well buy new.
  • Theflyersfan It's like the Mustang Mach-E. If this Pontiac was any other name that didn't have such a history and fan base attached to it, I think this would have sold better. It was never going to be a volume leader, and getting replacement parts from Australia takes forever (and sending car parts from America to Oz takes just as long thanks to customs) but this ticked a lot of boxes with RWD, coupes, and lots of power.
  • SilverCoupe These may well have been good cars, but as Big Al noted, the styling of these was just too bland for those in the market for a GTO. GTOs are meant to be more in your face. I am a coupe buyer, and these did not whet my interest.
  • Redapple2 For this price you can find some sweet german stuff
