President Donald Trump has backed off his proposed tariffs regarding the automotive industry, at least a bit.

The tariffs don't go away completely, but they will be reduced. Will this be enough to help out the automotive industry?

Or will the remaining tariffs still hurt too much?

As always, keep it civil -- the banhammer and the delete button are both standing ready.

Otherwise, go ahead and sound off below.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

  • Forward Observer The last time I had a door off my truck I hung it from my Little Giant ladder. But I was only replacing the hinge pins.I'm sorry if this sounds smarmy or smug, I am working on my people skills. (My therapist says I have a long way to go to catch up with some of you.) Would smarmy and smug come in handy if I worked for an automotive dealership? (I wonder.)
  • Arthur Dailey Auto 'journalists' should stop referencing the average new car purchase price and instead report on the mean price. We all understand that the glue of luxury vehicles and full size pickups inflate the average price. For me, 'affordable' hovers around the $35k mark.Under current N.A. standards, hatchbacks, stations wagons and non-luxury coupes are basically a lost cause.Personally I would like to see Canada convert to accepting vehicles that have passed the European standards, rather than adhering only to N.A. standards. That would allow for the importation of vehicles such as Dacias, Skodas, and yes more Fiats. Also some models for Japanese and Korean manufacturers that currently are not sold in North America. It may even help Mitsubishi in the Canadian market and allow for the return of Suzuki. Having more small, affordable vehicles available is not a bad thing.
