Toyota Might Consider GR Variants of Crossover Models

While it would be incredibly simple to write such musings off as a cynical marketing exercise, it doesn’t seem that Toyota is eager to sully the measures of performance cred enjoyed by the GR name.

report from Oz suggests those holding the levers of power at Toyota could be on the cusp of permitting the Gazoo Racing moniker to be applied on SUVs and crossovers. Speaking to an outlet down under, a top ranking GR official – GR President Tomoya Takahashi himself, in fact – expressed the notion that a market for high performance machines in that segment does exist and that GR could play a role in capturing part of that pie.

"Some people can only use SUVs because they have families," he said through a translator, pointing out the desire of some gearheads to retain a skiff of driving enjoyment in their lives even after the arrival of youngsters. Certainly, a precedent exists here with the likes of BMW and Mercedes long having offered hot variants of crossovers such as the X6 M and AMG-ized GLwhatever.

GR currently has numerous projects in the hopper, so it is unlikely one of these machines will pop forth from the skunkworks any time soon. Indeed, Takahashi is said to have emphasized the “in the future” portion of his comments during media availability with reporters earlier this month. And there’s nothing to say any creation will ever be shipped to North America.

Still, it is our opinion that Toyota would not completely deep-six the GR name with such a move, considering the care with which they’ve built the brand to date. This is worth mentioning since history is rife with such attempts to mine any scrap of popularity a sporty or specialized trim has created. As just one example, witness when General Motors captured lightning with the Pontiac 6000 STE, only to migrate most of the STE’s styling cues onto lesser trims the next model year thus spoiling part of the STE’s appeal and unique selling proposition.

Given the deep history between Toyota and Gazoo Racing, it is unlikely that’ll happen in this instance, so we don’t expect a GR Grand Highlander. But a GR RAV4 with lowering springs and more power isn’t totally outside the realm of possibility.

Toyota might, but I sure as hell will NOT.

On the other hand, if you got a mint LS460 pre-2012 Flagship (after that they hit it with the fugly stick up front), let me know. Esp if it is the Sports version.

There was a Sport package on the SWB LS 460 from 2010-2012. It got you a two-tone brown/black interior and some gorgeous forged wheels, but wasn't available with the (IMO much more desirable) Comfort Plus package that had upgraded interior materials and movable heated/cooled back seats.

They already use the GR-S badge on trucks and SUVs internationally. Such as the GR-S Hilux and Fortuner in the Philippines. Essentially a cosmetic and suspension package.

  • TheMrFreeze JD Power's surveys mean nothing to me. We live in an age where we have unprecedented access to actual, relevant data, and by that I mean working mechanics who see all of these cars up close and are willing to share what's good and what's crap. The wife drives a Fiat 500...had I listened to JD Power or Consumer Reports or whatnot we never would have bought one, but more than one mechanic I talked to said they were pretty reliable cars. Bought one, guess what...it's been reliable.
  • Akear Mary Barra has little or no feel for the market. This is yet another reason why GM will perform better when she retires. Barra's track record at GM is about as good as Biden debate performance last week.
  • Peter Nissan should hire someone to explain basic economics to their Board of Directors.
  • Jeff China now has the manufacturing capacity to produce 1/3 of the World's vehicles but under the current geopolitical environment this will not happen. As someone above stated all bets are off if China invades Taiwan. What many don't understand is that China plans for the long term and can wait it out till the geopolitical environment becomes less hostile toward China. I am not endorsing Chinese trade just stating that China is preparing for the future.
  • 3-On-The-Tree Im glad it was fixed in time that would’ve been a huge pain and inconvenience to you if it had broke. My 2009 C6 Corvette LS3 has been great with no recalls. My 1985 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 actually had a recall for the gas tank and seat belt warning stickers about 10 years go and Toyota fixed it, got a new tank, fuel lines and stickers.
