Used Car of the Day: 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle

Today's UCOTD is a rare one, at least for us -- we tend to pull from the same mix partly because of how we perceive the tastes of the B and B and partly because certain forums are simply more active than others.

Well, today, this 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle floated up into the list I use to pull picks from.

It has what the seller says is a "rare custom" 14-H Pewter paint job with a Buick pewter roof paint job. The car runs and drives but is not number-matching, and it has a 3.73 posi rear end.

A new top is on order.

It's hard to get a sense of condition -- in the lone full-body picture, it looks like it's in OK shape but dirty and perhaps in need of minor cosmetic attention.

I've always thought Chevelles were cool, especially SS models. I think my mom had one, though I am not sure if it was an SS, before I was born. I'll ask her next time we talk.

Either way, Chevelles are right up there with GTOs, Boss/Mach Mustangs, Camaros, and certain Mopar models when I summon the mental image of a "muscle car."

This one asks $19,250 and is for sale in Missouri.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

OK, so, buy this "Malibu" for 20k. Drop in an LS3 and a 4L80E, a disc brake kit, and a SS Dash with Dakota digital gauges. Swap out the undesirable 2-headlight front clip for a 4-headlight one from a '70. Paint it with stripes and slap some SS badges on it.

Take it to Mecum or B/J and walk away with $120k.

Don’t take it to calif and try to sell it as a 70 on a title. It will be impounded by the chp. I bought one from a friend of mine that was exactly this scenario.I brought it back to wis and just had fun with it.it was a 72 turned into a 70

By the way the Chp had it for 4 months

My first car was a hand-me-down 72 Chevelle that my sister had bought new. Unfortunately, the muscle car era was over by then, and the 307 engine was a dog with a measly 130 horsepower. Even the SS models were tame by 1972.
